Location

Mysore is a pleasant city with a very rich historical and cultural background. Mysore today, retains an old world charm, contributed by its broad shady avenues, well laid out gardens, fine buildings and a salubrious climate. It was the capital of Mysore State before the state of Karnataka came into existence.

From ancient times, this district has played a significant role in the history of South India. The Mysore District is a popular tourist destination, offering several attractions ranging from the royal splendor of Mysore City and its fabulous Dasara Festival (Sept-Oct) to exquisite temples, pilgrimage centres and scenic spots. Mysore city is at 770m above sea level and 140 kms from Bangalore. Also known as the City of Palaces, Mysore retains a quaint charm that never fails to enchant.

Volunteer quarters are in Madikeri is the headquarters of kodagu (formerly Coorg)and the town has much to offer volunteers. Misty hills, lush forests, acres and acres of tea and coffee plantations, and breathtaking views are what make Madikeri an unforgettable holiday destination

Madikeri is a great place to walk. Winding lanes meander off the main street. Mountain trails promise visual delights. And the Tadiyendamol, the tallest peak in the area, stands patiently, waiting to be climbed.

 

About the Project

India has some of the most spectacular palaces and fortresses, religious temples, untouched nature and very colorful settings. India cannot be explained but experienced. This program give you the opportunity to experience the various sides of India. Participants from all over the world travel together to work with the communities and educate the children of Mysore and the surrounding areas.  At the end of their volunteer placement, volunteers have the chance to choose from several exciting eco-trips in various parts of southern India.

 

Optional Introduction and Orientation Week

The Introduction Week is the first step for a great stay in a new country! It's an action packed and fun filled week that is dedicated to getting to know India in all its cultural aspects with a firsthand live in experience.

You will also get time to meet the local people, taste the cuisine and get familiar with Indian customs.

 

Volunteer work and contribution

As a volunteer you can choose to work in one of the following community projects:

 

Orphanage Project: Volunteers will join the staff of the orphanage and will help out in English teaching initiatives, after school sports, art classes, or building initiatives. Volunteers are an essential part of the orphanage community, and will be welcomed with open arms by children upon their arrival.

 

Medical Project: If you are embarking on a career in medicine, then this project is the perfect experience for you. With a wide range of activities suited to applicants with various levels of skills and experience, you can be sure of a varied and in-depth internship from which you will gain a greater appreciation and understanding of the challenges facing medical and health professionals in a country such as India.

 

Teaching Projects: Participants are invited to teach English & Special Education in a self- chosen fashion to the local children at a primary school, as well as at center premises during & after school activities. Whether you are a qualified teacher or simply interested in helping kids abroad, we have volunteer teaching opportunities at local schools. Participants should have a good level of English and some knowledge and prior experience in teaching is appreciated, but not necessary. You have to love children, as you will be surrounded with loads of them everyday.

 

Journalism Project: (minumum 4 weeks, apply at least 8 weeks before project date) This placement is ideally suited to journalism students with a good command of both written and spoken English, and any related experience will of course be advantageous. As an intern you will have the opportunity to gain an insight into the complexities of Indian society, possibly including politics, economy, religion, sports, the film industry and social and environmental issues.Working under experienced staff you may be able to help with a range of activities, such as research, article writing, proof reading, editing, interviewing and photography, in line with your relevant expertise and experience.

 

Accommodation & Food

This project now has a new volunteer center in the town of Madikeri, a picturesque, charming town situated at an elevation of over 5,000 ft. (1,525 m) above sea level and 1.5 hours drive from Mysore city.

Volunteers will stay in shared rooms and will receive three local vegetarian meals daily.

 

Travel Highlights

After you volunteer placement you can join one of the exciting eco-adventure trips (for an extra fee):

 

Trekking Week:  During the trek, you will experience India at its wildest. We will do an environmental trek in the Mudumalai national park with our experienced guides and go wildlife spotting with them during several jungle safari's. Following the national park, we will visit the Blue Mountains near Ooty, the famous Indian hill station, where we can do some further trekking and visit the tea gardens.

 

Body & Mind Week: A Fantastic program guaranteed to make you feel better. Our Body & Mind Program is carefully designed to make you feel younger, more energetic and refreshed. The body & mind program includes the possibility to learn more about the theory and practice of Ayurveda, Experience Yoga, Learn Meditation techniques.
