Location
Neot-Hakikar is a 'Moshav' (Israeli collective settlement) situated in the southern part of the Dead-Sea area near the Jordanian border, known as the lowest region on earth. Neot-Hakikar was established in 1970. The population is a mixture of mostly native-born Israelis and some immigrants from different countries. Some families are third generation on the Moshav. The location is far away from urban Israel in a quiet area surrounded by hilly moonlike landscape. Several small springs flow here whose banks nurture unique flora and fauna . Very salty water, soil and the extreme heat in the summer render this place with its natural springs an unbelievable oasis.
About the project
Meshek Lot is an organic farm, established by a partnership of two farmers with families from Moshav Neot-Hakikar (Sharon Adiv & Eran Luzon). Being organic, the farm takes into consideration environmental aspects as well as economical ones. The managers are committed to the preservations of the beautiful natural surroundings. They participate in environmental forums and promote the preservation/conservation of the unique natural resources around the Dead Sea.
Volunteer work and contribution
The volunteers generally pick organic peppers and cherry tomatoes in the green houses and work in the packing house as needed. However since the farm cultivates other crops, other farm chores maybe required during the work day. The farm exports its organic produce and needs to comply with high standards of quality. Therefore the volunteer work will be distributed according to the abilities and skills of each volunteer. The project managers have studied agronomy and have condsidrable experience. This is a wonderful opportunity for volunteers to ask and learn about organic farming or other related subjects. Everyday except Thursday one of the volunteers stays behind at the camp lodge to cook , clean and maintain the lodgings. The farm also employs foreign workers from Thailand, so this is a great opportunity to meet them and learn about their culture. Volunteers need to be culturally sensitive.
Volunteer work hours are from 5:30 -15:00 (Thursday off) with an hour break for breakfast in the middle. Part of the day will be spent working closely with a supervisor. The rest of the day volunteers will be working in a group or on their own. One day a week will be dedicated for touring and hiking around the area.
Accommodation
Volunteers are accommodated in Shkedi's camp lodge (www.shkedig.com) in one of the spacious tents with a heater inside. A bone fire under a geodesic dome and a semi- closed bar with drinks add to the special desert atmosphere. As for the facilities- a communal kitchen is available to cook meals or store food and drinks, wireless Internet connection, well maintained showers and toilets. The tent is shared by the group and has mattresses. Volunteers are advised to bring linen and sleeping bags (take into consideration warm days ,cold nights and the chance of occasional rain).
Travel Highlights
Volunteers are encouraged to take part in cultural events on the moshav and in the region that occur throughout the program.
The program also integrates weekly guided tours to local points of interest such as Ein-Gedi and the Dead Sea and hikes in the region around Neot-Hakikar. The historic capital of Jerusalem is only 145 Km away and the tourist city of Eilat and the Red Sea is 200 Km away. Daily buses are available from the main road to both locations.
