After each trip we ask our teen volunteers what stuck with them. A few from this year’s Bali group got back to us, and they talked about friends, snorkeling, and one very emotional moment on a beach.
Two weeks on Nusa Penida
The Sea Turtle Conservation for Teenagers program is a 14-day trip for teens aged 15 to 17. The group starts in Ubud, then heads to Nusa Penida for the turtle work: identifying species, helping with egg collection and incubation, cleaning tanks, making educational signage and joining beach cleanups. There’s time to explore the island too, with spots like Broken Tooth, Angel Billabong and Kelingking Point.
The people, the ocean, the turtles
Anzley and Ava, who traveled together, said meeting everyone was a staple of the trip:
“I formed such strong friendships with the people in my group and formed a kind of experience that shapes a teenager like myself.”
Snorkeling was their favorite part, especially “how beautiful each part of the ocean was in different places.”
Jolene said working so closely with sea turtles was “such an amazing experience.” She learned a lot, and the staff were kind when correcting mistakes.
For Andalucia, it was the release. Watching the turtles head out into the ocean reflected all the hard work and dedication she’d put into caring for them. Releases depend on conditions, so we can’t promise one on any given day, but when the sea and the schedule line up, it’s the moment the whole trip builds towards.
Was it worth it?
Jolene said traveling alone can be scary sometimes, but “in the end it’s always worth it if your goal is to explore and experience new things.” Andalucia kept it simple: “So much fun. Great experience that leaves you with lifelong friends.”
For parents
Anzley and Ava told us the trip was well organized and that parents and teens were kept reassured about each step. The program is designed specifically for teens, with experienced volunteer leaders and a higher level of supervision throughout.
