Under the Waterfalls: Last Summer’s Teen Group in the Azores

Posted by: Amanda .B

Put a group of teens in a new place with people they’ve never met, and you’d expect a few awkward silences at the start. Our Azores teen group skipped most of that. They hiked São Miguel’s trails, got in the water under the waterfalls, and got along so well that the group felt like a friendship circle rather than a tour party.

That’s what our Portugal – Azores Social Impact & Eco Adventure for Teenagers program is built for. It’s a 12-day trip for 15 to 17-year-olds that mixes real volunteer work with the kind of exploring São Miguel is made for.

The volunteering comes first

The days are split between two projects, with local NGO partners. In the Youth Support rotation, teens lead creative and educational games and workshops for local children and join English practice and cultural exchange activities. In the Sustainable Farming rotation, they help plant, harvest and maintain organic gardens, working alongside people with disabilities and social challenges.

On top of that, the group works as Digital Changemakers. They take photos and video to help the NGOs share their stories, then present their projects to the organizations at the end of each rotation. Teens leave with something finished that someone else will use.

And then there’s the island

São Miguel does a lot of the bonding for you. Beyond the hiking and waterfalls, the program includes:

  • Canyoning through island waterfalls. Getting wet together does a lot for group bonding, and teamwork gets tested a little too.
  • A day in Furnas. Lunch is cooked underground using geothermal heat, which is hard to beat as a meal story.
  • Whale watching in the Atlantic. These are wild animals, so sightings depend on the day and the sea, but it’s a highlight of the schedule.
  • Lagoa do Fogo and the Caldeira Velha thermal baths. A calm way to wind down near the end.

Evenings are for group dinners, game nights, karaoke and a farewell bonfire. The schedule is flexible and weather-dependent, so the exact order can shift.

Why it works for teens

All activities are supervised and designed for teenagers. Everything is built around group living, shared projects and reflection sessions with the program leaders, which is why friendships form so quickly. Parents also get updates from the on-site coordinator along the way.

If your teen wants a trip that is more than sightseeing, our advisors can help you work out whether this is the right fit. You can read the full itinerary on the program page: Portugal – Azores Social Impact & Eco Adventure for Teenagers
