Ghana – Teach Children in Accra – Images

Help support a local school in Accra! Work closely with the school children, help them learn in fun ways, and support the school itself.

Your Schedule at a Glance:

Arrival Day, Sunday: Arrive at Kotaka International Airport (ACC). You will be picked up by the local team and taken to the accommodations to settle in and meet fellow volunteers .

Day 1, Monday: The week will begin with an important orientation day. During this orientation, volunteers will tour the city of Accra and visit a museum, craft market and shopping area. Following lunch, volunteers will help with an after-school program or visit the community children supported by this program.

Days 2-5, Tuesday-Friday: On Tuesday your work will begin. Volunteers will be involved in classroom games and renovation work and/or painting the school building.

Days 6-7, Saturday-Sunday: The weekend is free for volunteers to relax or travel.

Remaining Weeks: Remaining weeks will follow the pattern of volunteering Monday-Friday and having weekends free. Departures are on a Saturday.

Important Note Important Note: Volunteers should apply at least one month in advance to allow for enough time to receive their tourist visa and vaccinations. All volunteers must have a yellow fever vaccination before they arrive in Ghana. On arrival, volunteers will need to present proof of vaccination.

Flights, visas (if required), travel health insurance, personal expenses, cost of transportation to airport on departure day, daily taxi transportation to and from project (approx. $6 per day)

The Republic of Ghana is in western Africa and is bordered by Togo, Cote d’lvoire, Burkina Faso and the Atlantic Ocean. There are currently over 75 ethnic groups coexisting in Ghana, making this country’s culture diverse and exciting.

Accra is the capital, and the largest city in the Republic of Ghana. It stretches along the Atlantic Ocean, making for many beautiful beaches! The accommodations for this project are in Teshie, a coastal suburb of Accra, which is just a train ride away from many popular tourist destinations such as the National Museum, Aburi Botanical Gardens and Makola Market.

 

As a volunteer on this project, you will work in a school, assisting teachers with English lessons and more. You may take part in games and additional educational exercises, as well as physical school reparations. Your contribution to this project will help to improve the conditions of the local school and help to build confidence of these young children in their English language skills and more.

Some of your tasks may include:

  • Assisting teachers with English lessons
  • Leading/ playing games with the children
  • Painting/ repairing the school buildings

 

A typical day: The Monday of your first week will be dedicated to the introduction for the project itself, as well as to Ghana. Volunteer work will be Tuesday – Friday, with the weekend free. You will begin the day with a Ghanaian breakfast before heading to the boarding school. Every day, you will have a lunch break and return to teaching before you end your day with a traditional dinner.

Internet icon Internet: Wi-Fi is not available at the accommodations. A SIM card with data is recommended for volunteers who wish to have more access to Internet services.

Laundry icon Laundry: Volunteers should expect to wash clothes by hand.

Accommodations icon Accommodations: Volunteers will stay in single-gender, shared rooms with 3-5 other people. Cold showers and fans are available. Air conditioning may be available at an additional cost.

Food icon Food: Three meals per day are included. Typical Ghanaian dishes will be served, including rice dishes, beans, fruits, vegetables, chicken, beef and fish mixed with occasional Western food.

Volunteers have an array of different options for how they would like to spend their free time. The accommodations are in a central location, making it easy for volunteers to explore the bustling city life of Accra. For the volunteer who prefers to relax, there is a stunning beach close to the accommodations and a river for those who wish to explore Accra by boat. There is a train station in Teshie, so for an additional fee, volunteers can easily get to their desired destinations. Some suggested destinations can be found below:
