Experience rural Japanese life through a cultural exchange program in a traditional mountain village. Connect with local residents, share your culture, explore Japanese traditions, and support English conversation activities with villagers and local students.
Program Highlights
Your Schedule at a Glance: (Minimum one-week commitment):
Day 1, Sunday: Arrive at Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) or Narita International Airport (NRT). You will travel independently from the airport and navigate by a bus to the Shinjuku Bus Terminal (12-30 USD) where you will be picked up and taken to your accommodations just outside of Otaki Village.
Day 2, Monday: Participants will join an orientation and guided tour of Otaki Village, helping them become familiar with the area and meet local residents.
Day 3-6, Tuesday-Friday: Participants will take part in cultural and language exchange activities in Otaki Village and the surrounding communities. Activities may include visiting culturally significant sites, such as mountain shrines, a lake formed by a historic landslide, and viewpoints near Mount Ontake. Participants will also have opportunities to speak with villagers and learn about local traditions, history, and rural life. The program provides transportation during scheduled program activities.
The schedule includes visits to a local elementary school and nearby high school. Participants may support younger students through simple English conversation and interactive activities and join English classes or the English Club at the high school.
Day 7, Saturday: Departure day for volunteers staying only one week. Free day for volunteers extending.
Remaining Weeks: Additional weeks will generally follow the same Monday-to-Friday schedule of cultural exchange, community activities, school visits, and local exploration. Weekends are free.

The locals, with a warm and welcoming spirit, embody the essence of traditional Japanese hospitality. However, it’s noteworthy that the community has a limited proficiency in English, making the English exchange program an invaluable opportunity for cultural exchange. This unique setting provides participants with the chance to not only enhance language skills but also to deeply connect with a community that lives harmoniously with both tradition and the untamed beauty of nature.
This program focuses on cultural exchange between international participants and the residents of Otaki Village. Participants share their culture, traditions, and experiences while learning about Japanese customs, history, and rural lifestyles.
Activities may include speaking with villagers, joining indoor and outdoor community activities, and exploring heritage sites and natural attractions around Otaki Village. Participants may also join English classes or the English Club at a nearby high school, where they can support students through conversation and interactive activities. Occasional visits to a local elementary school may also be arranged.
Participants should approach these activities with patience and understand that English learners will have different levels of confidence and ability. Enthusiasm for cultural exchange, respect for Japanese customs, and a willingness to communicate are important.
