Italy – Childcare & Community Support in Rome

Join a childcare volunteer program in Rome supporting local nonprofit organizations that assist preschool-aged children and families. Volunteers help care for toddlers while supporting caregivers and parents with daily activities. Your Schedule at a Glance 

Sunday – Arrival Day:
Arrive in Rome and meet the local team at the airport. Settle into the volunteer accommodation and meet fellow participants.

Monday – Orientation & City Introduction:
Attend a morning orientation session covering Italian culture, safety guidelines, program expectations, and practical information about living in Rome. In the afternoon, join a guided city tour offering a first introduction to Rome’s main attractions.

Tuesday to Friday – Volunteer Placement:
Travel to your placement and support local staff with childcare activities and daily routines. Volunteers usually work between 2–5 hours per day, depending on the placement schedule and current needs.

Meals During the Week:
Breakfast and dinner are usually provided at the accommodation, while lunch arrangements may vary depending on the placement location and schedule.

Saturday & Sunday – Free Days:
Weekends are generally free, giving volunteers time to relax, explore Rome, or visit nearby attractions.

Remaining Weeks: Remaining weeks will follow a similar schedule of working days Monday to Friday. Departure day is on Saturday.

What’s Included

Accommodations Accommodations: Volunteers stay in a modern hostel located in central Rome in shared dormitory-style rooms with up to four people of the same gender. The accommodation includes WiFi, air conditioning, shared common spaces, and a fully equipped kitchen.

Food Food: Three meals per day, including vegetarian and dietary options upon request.

Airport Transfers Airport Transfers: Airport pickup on Sundays between 7:00 AM and 10:00 PM.

Rome’s neighborhoods combine ancient architecture with vibrant modern city life. Volunteers can spend evenings enjoying Italian cuisine, local markets, museums, and scenic piazzas throughout the city. Public transportation makes it easy to visit different areas and experience daily life like a local. The city offers a lively international atmosphere while maintaining strong local traditions and culture. Rome’s parks, cultural events, and street life create plenty of opportunities to explore outside volunteer hours. The mild Mediterranean climate allows for volunteering throughout the year. A Typical Day for Volunteers

A typical volunteer day begins with traveling to the placement during either a morning, afternoon, or evening shift depending on the organization’s needs. Volunteers support local staff by helping organize activities, interacting with children, and assisting with supervision and childcare routines. During the placement, volunteers may participate in games, creative activities, storytelling, or outdoor play. After the shift, volunteers return to the accommodation and enjoy free time exploring Rome or relaxing with fellow participants.

Accommodations icon Accommodations: As a volunteer in a hostel located within Rome’s city center, offering a comfortable and social environment for international participants. Accommodation is in shared dormitory-style rooms with up to four volunteers of the same gender per room. Each room includes WiFi, air conditioning, bedding, towels, and a private western-style bathroom. The hostel also features several outdoor terrace areas, a communal lounge, and a fully equipped shared kitchen where volunteers can relax and socialize after their placements. Accommodation is cleaned regularly throughout the week, and volunteers are expected to help keep shared spaces tidy. Private apartment upgrades may also be available for an additional cost, subject to availability.

Meals are typically local-style and may include a variety of Italian dishes, fresh vegetables, salads, and other regional specialties. Safe drinking water is available in Rome, and volunteers can refill reusable water bottles at the accommodation.

Note: Volunteers travel independently to their placements using Rome’s public transportation system. Depending on the placement location, the commute may take up to approximately one hour each way, so participants should feel comfortable navigating the city independently.

Rome offers endless opportunities for exploration during free time. Visit famous landmarks including the Colosseum, Pantheon, Vatican City, and Spanish Steps. Walk through historic streets filled with cafés, bakeries, and local markets. Spend evenings enjoying authentic Italian cuisine, gelato, and lively piazzas with fellow volunteers. Explore museums, art galleries, and ancient ruins throughout the city. Relax in public parks or enjoy scenic viewpoints overlooking Rome’s rooftops. Volunteers can also discover quieter neighborhoods and local cultural events away from the main tourist areas.

Volunteers usually have two days off per week to explore the city and surrounding areas. Weekend trips to nearby towns or coastal destinations are also possible. Local coordinators can assist volunteers with excursion recommendations, transportation advice, and local travel tips throughout their stay.
