Spain – Teach English & Education Support in Barcelona

Join a teaching volunteer program in Barcelona supporting youth and adults from diverse cultural and social backgrounds through language education. Volunteers assist with English lessons and educational activities designed to improve communication skills, confidence, and future employment opportunities. Depending on language ability, participants may also support Spanish lessons within immigrant community projects. Your Schedule at a Glance (Minimum one-week commitment):

  • Sunday – Arrival Day
    Arrive in Barcelona and transfer to the volunteer accommodation. The rest of the day is free to settle in and meet other participants.
  • Monday – Orientation & City Introduction
    Enjoy breakfast at the accommodation before joining the orientation session covering local culture, program guidelines, and practical information. In the afternoon, volunteers join a guided city tour for a first introduction to Barcelona.
  • Tuesday to Friday – Volunteer Activities
    After breakfast, volunteers travel independently to their project placement and support local staff with educational activities and English lessons. Lunch and dinner are either at the accommodation, nearby restaurants, or prepared in the hostel kitchen depending on the location and schedule.
  • Weekends – Free Time
    Weekends are generally free, allowing volunteers to explore Barcelona, visit cultural sites, relax at local beaches, or discover nearby areas independently.

Volunteer Work Volunteer Work: Teaching English, supporting educational activities, and assisting youth and adults with language development.

Age Age: Minimum age 18. This program is suitable for a wide range of ages and welcomes participants interested in education, community support, and cultural exchange.

Number of Volunteers Number of Volunteers:  Up to 20 volunteers. You may work independently, alongside local volunteers, and usually with other international participants. Traveling as a group? What’s Included

Accommodations Accommodations: Shared accommodation in a social hostel with other international volunteers and travelers participating in different programs in Barcelona. Includes dormitory rooms, private bathrooms, common areas, outdoor green spaces, pool access during summer, and Wi-Fi. Optional private rooms are available for an extra fee.

Food Food: Breakfast and dinner daily, including vegetarian, gluten-free, and lactose-free options upon request.

Airport Transfers Airport Transfers: Airport pickup and public transportation transfer from Barcelona International Airport on Sunday arrival dates only.

Orientation Orientation: Includes an introduction to Spain, local culture, safety guidelines, volunteer expectations, practical information, and a guided city tour of Barcelona.

Support Support: Comprehensive and professional pre-departure travel guidance, 24/7 GoEco emergency hotline, experienced local field team.

Barcelona is one of Spain’s most vibrant and multicultural cities, known for its architecture, coastline, and lively atmosphere. The city is home to many nonprofit organizations and local schools working to support community members from diverse social and cultural backgrounds. Volunteers will experience daily life in a city where many cultures and languages come together. Public transportation makes it easy to move around the city and explore different neighborhoods. Outside volunteer hours, participants can visit famous landmarks, beaches, parks, and local markets. Barcelona offers a mix of historical architecture and modern urban culture. Volunteers will also have opportunities to interact with local residents while participating in educational activities. The city has a strong community-focused environment, with organizations working to improve educational access and employment opportunities. Participants can discover local cafés, museums, and cultural events throughout their stay. Barcelona also provides easy access to nearby coastal areas and regional travel opportunities within Spain.

About the Program

This teaching program supports local organizations and schools that provide educational assistance to youth and adults who may not otherwise have access to additional language lessons. Many of these organizations are understaffed and rely on volunteers to help expand their educational activities. The program focuses on improving communication skills, increasing confidence, and helping participants build future opportunities. Volunteers work alongside local nonprofit organizations and community projects that promote access to education and language learning in Barcelona.

 

About the Volunteer Work

Volunteers mainly assist with English teaching activities focused on conversational skills and vocabulary development. Depending on the placement and participant language ability, volunteers may also support Spanish classes connected to immigrant community projects. Lessons are adapted according to the needs, ages, and backgrounds of the students. A Typical Day for Volunteers

A typical volunteer day lasts approximately 3–5 hours depending on the project schedule. Volunteers may work in the morning, afternoon, or evening. Activities can include preparing lesson plans, leading conversational English exercises, supporting homework sessions, organizing games or storytelling activities for youth, and helping adults practice vocabulary connected to their professional goals. Free time outside volunteer hours can be used to explore Barcelona or relax with other participants.

Accommodations icon Accommodations: As a volunteer, you will stay in a sustainable social hostel located around 30 minutes from Barcelona’s city center, shared with other international participants involved in different programs. Accommodation includes gender-separated dormitories with shared bathrooms, bed sheets, Wi-Fi, common areas, outdoor green spaces, and access to a seasonal pool. Lockable storage boxes are available for personal belongings, and private rooms can be requested for an additional fee, subject to availability.

Food icon Food: The program provides two daily meals prepared by local chefs: breakfast and lunch. The food features fresh, locally sourced ingredients, allowing volunteers to savor a diverse range of traditional Catalan and Spanish dishes. We can accommodate most dietary restrictions or needs. Just mention this in your application form.

Barcelona combines Mediterranean beaches, world-famous architecture, and a lively cultural atmosphere. Volunteers can spend their free time exploring colorful neighborhoods, local cafés, public markets, museums, and historic landmarks throughout the city. The program includes a guided city tour to help participants get familiar with Barcelona and discover local culture from the start of their stay.

Outside volunteer hours, participants can relax by the sea, enjoy local food, explore nearby coastal areas, or experience Barcelona’s nightlife and cultural scene. The city’s extensive public transportation system makes it easy to move around independently and discover different parts of the region. Weekends are generally free and provide time for sightseeing, day trips, or joining optional activities organized locally.
