Volunteering in South Africa – Diverse Wildlife Sanctuaries

Posted by: Michelle

Two days a week were spent working at the Diverse Wildlife Sanctuaries project which are both busy and staff appreciate volunteers helping with chores like preparing 3 meals a day for the primates or mucking out elephants night enclosures.

Another two days of the week volunteers are kept busy at the Cheetah Sanctuary which also has designated areas for Wild Dog and Vulture species. Various jobs I participated in include collecting branches for vulture enclosure, road maintenance and erosion control, enrichment activities with meerkat and honey badger.

More hard work is needed at another reserve where the day was spent clearing alien plant species while giraffe, nyala, kudu, zebra and a donkey where watching nearby.

It wasn’t all work and no play, shopping mall and markets are very close, weekend safari at a game reserve gave me once in a lifetime experience and sightings of the Big 5 and more. Also time for many other tourist attractions including the Magalies Cableway, Starkfontein Caves and Maropeng discovery centre all made for an incredibly fun weekend! I’ve loved it here so much I’m sticking around for more time in 2016!!
