Volunteering in Thailand – Sawasdee Ka!

Posted by: Emma

Hello! I recently came back from the Elephant Village Experience through GoEco. There are so many wonderful things to say about volunteering in Thailand that I honestly don’t know where to start, but here it goes!

Between the airport pick-up, getting around Khao San Road in Bangkok and heading to Surin and the Elephant Village, this team has it all organized! It was super easy for us volunteers to get around everywhere!

Once we arrived to the village, we were shown our homestay, what we would be doing and when we will be doing it. We cut bamboo or sugar cane every day while we were in the village. The two elephants living in the backyard need to eat too! We also helped with little paper projects that were made from the elephant’s poop (the Thai people are VERY resourceful!)

Walking the elephants to the river is literally the best part, and THE whole reason why anybody and everybody should do this project! Once you get to the river you get in the water with them and help wash the dirt and mud away from them! While they’re bathing, they poop too and the poop just floats right on by. It’s truly an experience! Plus the Wednesday market is the perfect place to treat yourself to a coconut and banana ice cream from a local vendor!

You get so immersed in the Thai culture here and you really get to see things from their perspective and from their point of view. It’s humbling, it’s hot, it’s amazing… it’s just something you should experience for yourself. Don’t just take my word for it!
