About the projects
There are three project options that the participant can choose from in Delhi. The first is a teaching program that takes place in community schools. Volunteers are needed to either teach in classrooms or teach to groups of children in an 'open air classroom'. The second option gives volunteers the opportunity to work at an orphanage, providing education, warmth, affection, and care to disadvantaged and orphaned children. Another project is working at shelter homes for street children in and around Delhi. This will give volunteers the opportunity to assist in basic literacy, recreation and care.
Volunteer work and contribution
Teaching Program:
Teaching program volunteers will be engaging and assisting in various activities mainly in community schools set up by the government. Daily work (5 hours, 5 days/week) and responsibilities include:
- Teaching basic English and other subjects to children from various backgrounds including slum areas and underprivileged families.
- Engage them in different activities such as art and craft, games and storytelling.
- Teach them good hygiene habits and good manners
- Helping professionals with general tasks
Orphanage Program:
Volunteers at the orphanage program will assist a large number of children in India who are without homes. The children come from difficult circumstances. Participants are therefore encouraged to bring their own skills, such as arts, and games to bring fun, warmth, and enjoyment into their lives. Daily work (5/6 hours, 5 days/week) and duties include:
- Assisting with children's education through taking extracurricular lessons, homework
- Helping the children with life skills including general education.
- Undertaking any administration tasks allocated by staff.
Children's Shelter Program:
The third option is to volunteer with street children working at various shelter homes in and around Delhi. This program can really make a world of difference to a child's life. Daily work (5/6 hours, 5 days/week). Responsibilities include:
- Provide basic literacy and assisting with informal education classes, such as math and geography
- Play games and introduce them to new activities
- Teaching them good manners and hygiene habits
- Most importantly spend time with them and show them affection.
Accommodation
Volunteers will stay in either a volunteer house or host family accommodations in Delhi. Volunteers are placed in the accommodations depending upon the distance from the project and the type of program they are doing. The accommodations are comfortable and volunteer houses have electricity and running water and hot water heaters. In the volunteer house, volunteers are provided with basic bed, mattress, pillow, bed sheet and blanket and a quilt depending on the temperature of the area. Dehli has an excellent transport system (buses, rickshaws, and Delhi Metro), and usually it takes around 30 minutes to reach these projects but it depends on final placement. For the orphanage program, in certain cases accommodation are provided in the orphanage itself.
