The Republic of Ghana is located in western Africa and is bordered by Togo, Cote d’lvoire, Burkina Faso and the Atlantic Ocean. There are currently more than 75 ethnic groups coexisting in Ghana, making this country’s culture diverse and exciting.
Accra is the capital, and largest city of the Republic of Ghana. It stretches along the Atlantic Ocean, making for many beautiful beaches! The accommodations for this project are located in Teshie, a coastal suburb of Accra, which is just a train ride away from many popular tourist destinations such as the National Museum, Aburi Botanical Gardens and Makola Market.
As a volunteer on this project you will be working in a school, assisting teachers with English lessons and more. You may be participating in games and additional educational exercises, as well as physical school reparations. Your contribution to this project will help to improve the conditions of the local school as well as help to build confidence of these young children in their English language skills and more.
Some of your tasks may include:
A typical day: The Monday of your first week will be dedicated to the introduction for the project itself as well as to Ghana. Volunteer work will be Tuesday – Friday, with the weekend free. You will begin the day with a Ghanaian breakfast before heading to the boarding school. Every day you will have a lunch break and return to teaching before you end your day with a traditional dinner.
Internet: WiFi is not available at the accommodations. A SIM card with data is recommended for volunteers who wish to have more access to Internet services.
Laundry: Volunteers should expect to wash clothes by hand.
Accommodations: Volunteers will be staying in single-gender, shared rooms with 3-5 other people. Cold showers and fans are available. Air conditioning may be available at an additional cost.
Food: Three meals per day are included. Typical Ghanaian dishes will be served, including rice dishes, beans, fruits, vegetables, chicken, beef and fish mixed with occasional Western food.
