Cape Town is one of South Africa’s most exciting destinations, combining natural beauty, cultural diversity, and fascinating history. Surrounded by Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean, the city offers spectacular coastal scenery, vibrant neighborhoods, and plenty of opportunities for exploration.
Volunteers stay in Table View, a coastal suburb known for its beaches and magnificent views of Table Mountain across Table Bay. The accommodation is within walking distance of local restaurants, shops, and the beach, providing a convenient base for your stay.
Volunteer placements take place in communities around Cape Town’s West Coast, where local schools and early childhood education centers provide important educational services. During free time, explore the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town’s museums and historic neighborhoods, or enjoy outdoor activities along the coast.
The nearby Cape Peninsula is home to the Cape of Good Hope, nature reserves, and the famous African penguins at Boulders Beach. The Cape Winelands, including Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, are also within reach and offer scenic landscapes, historic estates, and excellent local cuisine.
Cape Town enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with generally warm, dry summers and cooler, wetter winters. Its combination of community volunteering, culture, nature, and adventure makes it an excellent destination for travelers looking to experience South Africa beyond traditional sightseeing.
About the organisation:
GoEco has been offering community volunteering opportunities in Cape Town for many years, working with an experienced local team that supports schools and early childhood education projects. The program provides additional classroom assistance and educational resources to schools in communities where these services can make a meaningful difference. The local team works with several schools, including preschools serving children aged approximately one to five and a primary school supporting older students. These projects focus on early childhood development, English language exposure, creative learning, and helping children build the foundations for future education. Volunteers work alongside local teachers and community staff, contributing to ongoing educational activities rather than replacing professional educators. Through classroom assistance, interactive learning, and daily support, volunteers help teachers provide additional attention and engaging activities for children. ### Mature Volunteer Work This version of GoEco’s Cape Town program is particularly recommended for adults aged 60+, combining meaningful community volunteering with private accommodation, organized cultural excursions, and opportunities to meet international travelers.
About the volunteer work:
As a volunteer, you will support local educators in preschools, educare centers, or community schools around Cape Town. Activities focus on helping children develop essential learning and social skills through educational games, storytelling, songs, creative activities, and daily classroom routines.
Volunteers may assist with preparing teaching materials, helping children practice basic English, organizing arts and crafts, and supporting teachers during playtime and other activities. Depending on the placement, you may also participate in sports days, community outreach, or other educational initiatives. No previous teaching or childcare experience is required. Local teachers and project coordinators provide guidance, allowing participants to contribute their time, enthusiasm, and relevant personal or professional experience. The work involves interacting with children, walking and standing during activities, and participating in classroom or occasional outdoor tasks. Specific responsibilities depend on the needs and schedule of the local project.
Volunteer activities may include:
Schools and Educare Project: Volunteers will be placed in one of seven schools in the community. Six of the schools are preschools for children from 1 to 5 years old who speak Xhosa or Afrikaans. The preschools focus on early childhood development and preparing the children for regular schools by teaching basic English and cognitive skills. The other available placement is at a farm school for grades 1–7 where you’ll be assisting with older students in their school programs.
Holidays: The holidays are a time for the kids to have fun, so the programs are less structured and may change depending on the amount of children that arrive on the day. During this time, the Settlement & School and Educare Projects will only run from 8:00 am – 2:00 pm and will be limited to sports days, game days, outings to the beach or pools, etc. Depending on the funds available, you could also be involved in building or renovations projects. During this time, school days are likely to be shortened and more focused on sports, games, outings, etc.
During the period from Christmas to New Year’s, there will be little to no volunteer work available. It is therefore not recommended that volunteers book short-term stays during this time. However, food and accommodations will still be available and therefore volunteers booking a longer stay will remain at the project during these dates.
This program is recommended for active, independent adults aged 60 and above who are interested in education, cultural exchange, and community volunteering. The local program also welcomes eligible participants from younger age groups.
Requirements include:
Participants should bring comfortable clothing, suitable walking shoes, sun protection, and clothing appropriate for the season. The program involves regular classroom activities and occasional outdoor tasks. Volunteers should be comfortable participating in these activities and discussing any relevant practical requirements with GoEco before booking.
Cape Point Tour (Included):
On your second Saturday of your volunteer program, you will take a group tour of Cape Point. En route to Hout Bay, you’ll stop for a tourist must-have – a picture of the “12 Apostles.” Your next stop will be Cape Point Nature Reserve – home to an abundance of flora and fauna, as well as baboons and ostriches, to name a few animals found roaming the streets. There are two lighthouses and the most southwestern point of the African continent to be seen here, and you will spend some time in the reserve. Simons Town is your lunch stop and also home to the South African Navy and a colony of penguins. Boulders Beach was set up for the penguins to roam free and is your last stop for the day before returning to the accommodation. Please note the itinerary for the tour day is flexible based on local conditions and weather and is subject to change.
Travel Extras (Not Included):
Make the most out of your time in Cape Town by signing up for any of these activities for your weekend or days off. You may sign up following registration. Please note there is an additional fee for these activities.
