From a day with Buddhist monks to a tour of Pub Street, this Culture Week will show you all sides of Cambodia! Enjoy the rich, cultural experience before your volunteer project, or join the tour by itself to learn about Cambodia and its history.

Program Highlights:

Your Schedule at a Glance (Minimum one-week commitment):

Arrival Day, Sunday: Arrive at Siem Reap International Airport (REP). You will be picked up from the airport and transferred to your accommodation in Siem Reap. Take the time to settle in and meet other travelers.

Day 1, Monday: Begin your week with an introduction to Khmer culture and a language lesson. Continue with a tour of the local area, a visit to the local markets and an excursion to the temples of Wat Preah Prom Rath and Wat Thmey. End your day with an excursion to Pub Street and the local night market; the liveliest area of the city.

Day 2, Tuesday: Today will be filled with tours and excursions! Visit a silk farm and West Baray, a beautiful place to go for a swim. Head to the Museum of War and stroll through a local craft shop that displays Khmer arts and crafts.

Day 3, Wednesday: Depart for Samraong and learn about some of the volunteer opportunities that are available there for after the Culture Week. You will also have the opportunity to explore a nearby rural village and interact with the local community members before enjoying an authentic, Cambodian dinner.

Day 4, Thursday: Visit the surrounding villages and get a more in-depth tour of Samraong before going to a local school, which was built from the ground up by previous volunteers. You will also have the opportunity to take a cooking class in the afternoon and taste your creation afterward.

Day 5, Friday: On your last day, you will visit a local temple and spend the morning assisting monks with their daily chores, before learning more about Buddhism from a Q&A session. Take the afternoon to relax and spend the evening with your new friends.

Days 6, Saturday: Depart from Samraong this morning or stay on and volunteer at one of the projects.

Samraong, or the “Impenetrable Jungle,” is the capital of Oddar Meanchey Province, Cambodia’s newest province, which is on the border with Thailand. To this day, the town is still recovering from a long civil war, which resulted in decades of isolation. Most people visit Samraong to do much-needed community and volunteer work. Samraong is about two hours away from the popular tourist destination city of Siem Reap, where you can see Angkor Wat.

 

Internet icon Internet: WiFi is available in public areas.

Laundry icon Laundry: There are no laundry facilities available on-site.

Accommodations icon Accommodations: Volunteers will stay in shared, simple, same-gender, dorm-style rooms. A bathroom will be shared with other volunteers. There is no hot water for showering.

Food icon Food: During the week, three meals per day are provided. On the weekends, only brunch and dinner are provided. The food will be traditional Cambodian and include a lot of rice.
