Volunteering in Italy – Dolphins and Whales

Posted by: Susanna

This past summer I had the opportunity of volunteering with GoEco at the Dolphin and Marine Research project. The project took place off the coast of Naples on Ischia Island. I didn’t really know what to expect, but I was so happy I volunteered. Initially I was looking to be involved in some volunteer program while traveling through Europe. This project really sparked my interest because I am a veterinary medical student and have always had an interest in dolphins.

The people were so friendly, the food was amazing, and the days on the water were quite enjoyable. I really enjoyed when we went out together and experienced the island life.

One night we all went out to a salsa bar for dancing. It was an experience that I will cherish for a while. I still have all the videos of the amazing dancers! There was a lot of downtime on the boat, which allowed for lots of self-reflection. It was so peaceful and as long as you had your eyes on the horizon no one got sea sick.

When we did see the dolphins and whales it was exciting and definitely something I will take away with me. Now that I am back home I really miss the people, gelato, homemade Italian food, and boat living. I would recommend this project to anyone looking to get involved in something unique and fun!
