Volunteering in South Africa – Monkeying Around

Posted by: Darion

After volunteering in South Africa for four weeks at the Monkey and Wildlife Rehabilitation Center project, I can definitely say it was one of the best experiences of my life. Not only did the experience teach me how to care for monkeys among other animals, but it taught me a lot about myself as well. I realized how to work with all kinds of people, how to be diligent and most importantly how to become a stronger version of myself (not only in physical ways although there was lots of that, but also mentally).

At first it seemed like everything was going to be a challenge. I was intimidated by the people, the monkeys and of course the overwhelming amount of information and work. However, it didn’t take long for me to get past all that and have the most rewarding experience in my life.

Sure, you spend your mornings and most of the day doing things like cleaning the monkey cages for example, but once all the work is done and you have the free time to go into the cage and be with the monkeys you can really tell that every little thing you do for them is extremely beneficial.

One of a monkey’s favorite things to do is dirty a cage you just cleaned! Seriously though the bonds you can create with any of the animals at the center is amazing, I never thought a monkey could mean so much to me. I really didn’t realize how much they could get into my heart. No matter your mood or your circumstances, those cuddles will surely put a smile on your face that you won’t forget.

What Bob and Lynn have going on at the center is one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. It was beyond incredible to be a part of it. I would stay there for a lifetime if I could.
