Volunteering in Israel | Saving Eilat’s Coral Reef

Posted by: Jacquie

As with any new experience, I was a little nervous and apprehensive as I had no idea what to expect when volunteering in Israel. Those feelings quickly disappeared upon meeting my fellow volunteers at the GoEco orientation where we were briefed on what to expect and all of our questions were answered.

My arrival in Eilat, accommodation, transportation and everything else was very well-organised, which made the new experience very pleasant. Working at the Coral Reef Conservation project was one of the most amazing experiences I have had. The people who work there are friendly and accommodating. There is a lot of joking, laughing and I was made to feel like part of the family. Work tasks varied daily. My favourite thing to do was explore the reef. It is really beautiful and it felt good knowing that I was helping to conserve the reef.

I was also lucky enough to meet one of my best friends while volunteering at the reserve. It was great to have someone to talk to and experience Eilat with. We did everything together and we have already made arrangements to see each other again.

I did not want to leave Eilat and I was very sad when my project came to an end. I had made wonderful friends at the Reserve and at the hostel and saying goodbye was hard to do. However, I know I will be back one day. The experience as a whole made me stronger and more confident. Volunteering teaches you independence and how to deal with various situations. I would highly recommend volunteering with GoEco to everyone!
