About Kruger National Park
The Kruger National Park (KNP) [1] is in north-east of South Africa and and runs along the border of Mozambique in the east, Zimbabwe in the north, and the southern border is the Crocodile River. The park covers 20,000 square kilometers and is divided into 14 different ecozones, each supporting different wildlife. It is one of the main attractions of South Africa and it is considered the flagship of South African National Parks (SANPark).
About the Race Against Extinction project
This project is one of the oldest wildlife care and conservation projects for cheetahs in Africa. Set in the foothills of the beautiful Magaliesberg Mountains, only an hour's drive from the Pilansberg National Park and the "Lost City".
Volunteers usually assist with the daily care of many of the animals found at this 37 year old wildlife care centre. The Wild At Heart Volunteer Management Team based at this project will ensure a lifetime experience which involves caring for a variety of animals such as cheetahs, wild dogs, brown hyenas, serval, suni antelope, blue and red duiker, bontebok, riverine rabbit and vultures - including the very rare Egyptian vulture. Many of these have been successfully bred to be released back into the wild, in order to reintroduce such species where they have disappeared or are no longer abundant.
