Distinguished by its cobblestone streets and medieval architecture, York is an English city with a fascinating history. York is a popular tourist destination with a wide array of museums and traditional pubs that display the city’s ancient Roman and Viking heritage.

More than just being a glimpse into English history, York is also connected to modern Britain, being less than three hours away from the bustling capital city of London. The hostel is located a short, six-minute walk away from the train station and ten minutes’ walk from the tourist sights of St.Mary’s Abbey and Roman Walls.
Volunteers will be working 4-5 days per week and have 2-3 days off, not necessarily on weekends. Volunteers will be gaining experience in the four main areas of focus in the hospitality business; reception, maintenance, housekeeping and food and beverage/ bar areas. The shifts will vary each day and be a combination of those that begin at 7:00 AM and those that end at 11:00 PM.

In a city that is so filled with history, lie many places for exploration. A few of our suggested travel highlights are listed below:

Jorvik Viking Centre
The Jorvik Viking Centre is a museum that is filled with life-size mannequins that depict the life of the Vikings when they were living in York, which was called Jorvik then and was a capital city. This is a “must” for any volunteer who is interested in this period of history.

National Railway Museum
This museum has the largest collection of railway pieces in the world, over 1 million in this museum alone, which is why it attracts such a large number of tourists each year.

York Castle
The York Castle has been standing since the 11th century and is another destination for history lovers!

York Art Gallery
For the more artistic volunteer, the York art gallery is the perfect destination. This gallery contains exhibitions including 14th century art, watercolors, ceramics and more.
