This project takes place in Eastern Iceland in the relatively lush, green area of Fjarðabyggð. This area consists of several different fishing villages that sit at the foothills of grand mountains. The area’s endless green walking paths and amazing fjords showcase Iceland’s diverse landscape. The eastern region was carved into being by the movements of glaciers and is now one of the best regions in Iceland to see the luminous Northern Lights.
This project has two main focuses: housing renovation and intercultural exchange. Every evening volunteers will share about their country of origin before heading out together to search for the best views of the Northern Lights.

The volunteer work during the day focuses on the renovation of houses that are used during summer volunteering programs. Each volunteer will be involved in specific tasks that are dependent on their level of carpentry and construction experience.

Some of your tasks may include:
  • Cleaning
  • Painting
  • General carpentry and construction

Sample Schedule: Upon arrival volunteers will enjoy a day-long minibus trip from the south of Iceland to the east, and if the weather permits, volunteers may also get the chance to go through the west and north. For the remaining days volunteers will work on renovation tasks during the day, followed by a group dinner. Following dinner will begin the search for the Northern Lights. It’s important to bring a camera, tripod and laptop.

Laundry:  There is a washing machine available for an additional fee

  • Basic level of English
  • Physically fit *Please note that the showers are a 2km walk from the accommodations
Volunteers on this program have free access to the swimming pools in the area. Traditionally, natural pools have an important social role in Icelandic culture. Most Icelandic pools offer indoor and outdoor swimming, saunas, hot tubs or steam rooms. The  East region is ideal for hiking as well, so don’t forget your hiking boots!

The local team will also be able to organize a range of affordable weekend tours to some of Iceland's more popular destinations. These tours can include unique Icelandic sights such as glaciers, waterfalls, volcanic and geothermal areas, forests, geysers, hot springs, mountain ranges and breathtaking towns.
